developmental/line editing
A developmental edit is typically the manuscript’s first round of editing, addressing large-scale items such as organization and flow, plot consistency, chapter structure, and narrative logic.
copyediting
A copyedit is a thorough edit to fix the mechanics of a manuscript including grammar and punctuation, style and format, fact checking as needed, among other items. It isn’t an early-stage developmental edit which generally will have taken place by the time a manuscript is ready for copyediting.
proofreading
A proofread corrects the next iteration of the manuscript after it has been copyedited to ensure consistency and that the pages are free from typos and any typesetting errors.
